Building up to the launch of the North Korean missile/satellite (depending on who you believe), on the 5th April 2009, Anglo-Korean Condensed was developed from the forms of Korean characters in context on Democratic People’s Republic of Korea propaganda posters.
It aimed to highlight the misunderstandings and communication breakdown between North Korea and the rest of the world. To an extent the typeface is designed to be counter intuitive to read, forcing the viewer to take time to piece the words together as if reading a foreign language.
The statements used on the posters were taken directly from rhetoric in press releases from the Korean Central News Agency – The DPRK state operated news organisation.
